US Navy Selects Radiant to Power Critical Infrastructure at Naval Weapons Station Crane

Radiant is only nuclear company selected by all three U.S. military departments - the Army, Navy and Air Force

Radiant, the company building the world’s only plug-in ready, transportable commercial nuclear microreactors, today announced its selection by the Department of the Navy to deploy its Kaleidos microreactor at Naval Weapons Station Crane, Indiana.

The Navy’s selection marks another major milestone in Radiant’s drive to bring transportable nuclear power to military and commercial customers. Radiant is the only nuclear company partnered with the Army, Navy and Air Force, underscoring military confidence in Kaleidos and Radiant’s ability to deliver mission-ready nuclear power.

“There is not an organization in the world with more experience in nuclear power than the U.S. Navy,” said Tori Shivanandan, President and Chief Operating Officer of Radiant. “We are honored to be selected by the U.S. Navy for this important work and we thank the Navy and the Army’s Dr. Waksman for their confidence in Radiant to deliver reliable, resilient nuclear power wherever their mission demands. Our mission of Atoms for Prosperity is today strengthened by the support of the Navy and the State of Indiana.”

“The Department of War is actively breaking down the barriers that have prevented deployment of nuclear reactors,” said Mike Dodd, Assistant Secretary of War for Critical Technologies. “The selection of Radiant for NWS Crane represents a critical acceleration in our mission. We are not just investing in technology; we are leveraging vital commercial capabilities to deliver an immediate, asymmetric advantage directly to the warfighter.”

Selection by the U.S. Navy carries weight few endorsements can match. The Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, founded in 1948, sets the most demanding engineering standard in nuclear energy. Its reactors have steamed more than 171 million miles and logged over 7,500 reactor-years of operation without a single reactor accident. For more than 70 years, the Navy has run reactors safely in the harshest conditions on earth, with sailors living feet away. For Radiant, earning the confidence of the institution that wrote the playbook on reactor safety is a powerful independent validation of Kaleidos.

“Our installations are foundational warfighting platforms and ensuring their resilience is essential to supporting the Fleet,” said Vice Adm. Brad Collins, Commander, Navy Installations Command. “By investing in advanced capabilities like this microreactor at Crane, we are providing our Shore infrastructure with the resources needed to sustain the mission and empower our warfighters.”

Kaleidos is a factory-built, transportable 1-megawatt microreactor transportable by land, sea, or air and deployed directly at customer sites. Plug-in ready, each reactor provides up to five years of power before refueling across a twenty year life. Unlike permanently installed nuclear facilities that require long lead times and site-specific construction, Kaleidos provides energy in a box. It requires no cooling water, no major excavation, and no extensive on-site construction. Kaleidos gives customers a dependable source of prime power that works independent of the grid, reducing exposure to external power disruptions assuring mission continuity.

The project will advance through design refinement, prototype testing, environmental review, site preparation and regulatory coordination before deployment. Radiant will work with the Navy, Army, DIU, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and other partners, with technical expertise and support from the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. Safety, physical security and environmental requirements will guide the project throughout its lifecycle.

“The Janus Program was built from day one to deliver real, reliable hardware and systems to solve energy resilience challenges across all of the Services,” said Dr. Jeff Waksman, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy and Environment. “We are excited to partner with the Navy to place a Janus reactor at NWS Crane, and by doing so to deliver the state of Indiana its first advanced microreactor.”

For Radiant, the partnership advances a development model in which military deployments prove out the national security mission of the product and establish the operational track record needed to reach full rate manufacturing production. The early operating experience at Navy Crane and other military installations provides the reliability proof point to enable government and customer customers to procure Kaleidos at scale.

Radiant’s Kaleidos reactor is undergoing the country’s most rigorous test campaign at the Idaho National Laboratory DOME facility. Following a competitive selection process, the Department of Energy awarded Radiant exclusive access to the facility for a full year. Kaleidos is undergoing the industry’s only full-scale, full-power, extended duration reactor test- using the same reactor design and custom spec’d fresh fuel that will be used for customers deployments. By testing the reactor under real-world operating conditions, Radiant is demonstrating the performance, reliability and readiness required to deliver resilient, deployable nuclear power to America’s warfighters.
